Some RPGs used byte pairs so the odd byte would be the item code, and the even byte would be the quantity, so a ZZZZ value as the incrementor of 0100 would set every odd byte to one number higher than the previous odd byte, and the quantity of all times would be set to the same. There are also codes to apply a pattern of values (say incrementing each sequential bytes by 1, starting at a certain address, which is used if you are using a code to unlock every item type in the game, as you can increment the item ID by 1, and set the quantity of them to the same for all items. It's essentially a "if true, activate code, else deactivate code). An XX value of D0 watches the address YYYYYY with a length of 2 bytes (useful for joker codes, aka monitoring controller inputs, as each controller holds 2 bytes of RAM for registering their digital button inputs) and triggers the next code line when the address matches value ZZZZ (as in you are holding specific buttons on that controller). An XX value of 80 edits memory address YYYYYYwith a length of 2 bytes to value ZZZZ. An XX value of 30 means it edits address YYYYYY with a length of one byte to value 00ZZ. Say a code is XXYYYYYY ZZZZ (PS1 examples because that is what I am most familiar with). I still remember a lot of it, and PS2 would just be longer codes and probably a different meaning for some of the digits. That format was 8 numbers followed by 4 numbers per line. I learned on PS1 with Action Replay/GameShark, which used unencrypted (raw) codes at the time. It's not that complicated once you learn the basic math, and have the tools to read addresses.
